Different Paintless Dent Removal Techniques

If your auto body mechanic has assessed your dented vehicle and deemed paintless dent removal (PDR) an effective option, two approaches can be explored. PDR can use either metal rods and a body pick to resolve a dented panel or another technique called glue pulling to remove the dent.

Metal Rods and Body Pick

The mechanic utilizes metal rods and a body pick to massage the indentation back to its intended shape from the underside of the damaged panel. Removing body panels is often necessary to access the dent. This is the most common method as it poses no threat to the vehicle’s existing paint and is typically an easier solution than the alternative. In many cases, this form of PDR is completed the same day.

Glue Pulling

The second option in PDR is glue pulling. This approach tends to be an alternative as it poses a higher risk to a vehicle’s paint; however, it is a good solution when accessing the underneath of the panel is not feasible. This technique glues plastic tabs to the surface of the damaged panel right over the dent. Following this, a pulling tool is connected to the tabs to pull the dented metal back to its original form.

Glue pulling comes with a number of risks. If the tabs are sized incorrectly, too much glue is applied to the dented metal, the glue isn’t given enough time to dry or force is applied in the wrong direction, the vehicle’s paint could be stripped causing further damage.
