Do You Practice Safe Driving?
Technological advancements continue to lower the number of accidents caused by vehicle error; however, human error is still a major factor in many auto-related accidents. So, what can those of us who operate vehicles do to prevent vehicle incidents?
Avoid Speeding
At higher speeds, not only do your chances of being in an accident increase but the impact you will experience on collision is also greater. The best practice is always leaving early as it allows you to drive at the posted speed and still arrive at your destination on time.
Stay off Electronic Devices!
Using electronic devices like your cell phone while driving is extremely dangerous and irresponsible. Talking and texting draw your focus away from where it should be–the road in front of you! Your reaction time to unexpected situations drops considerably when using a mobile device. Please be a responsible driver and stay off the phone.
Electronic devices are not the only distractions drivers face. Eating, listening to overly loud music and engaging with passengers can all take your attention away from the road.
NEVER Driver under the Influence of Alcohol
I’m sure we have all heard news reports discussing the tragic outcomes that can result from driving under the influence of alcohol. Alcohol can impact your ability to properly assess situations, impair your motor skills and lower your reaction time. In Ontario, the legal blood alcohol level (BAC) is 0.08 and anything higher is a criminal offense.
Practice Defensive Driving
Defensive driving incorporates many of the tips given above. By driving defensively, you make a conscious decision to not only avoid reckless driving habits but also to take the necessary precautions to avoid an accident. This means leaving appropriate space in-between you and the vehicle in front of you. Another important aspect of defensive driving is, of course, obeying the speed limit.
Driving defensively protects you and your vehicle and offers you the opportunity to save money. Some insurance companies offer discounts to drivers who have completed a defensive driving course.
