What Condition Are Your Brakes in?

When it comes to vehicle handling and safety, brakes are of utmost importance. Functioning brakes not only help protect the well-being of you and any passenger you may have in the vehicle, they also avert the expensive bills that can be incurred in a vehicle collision. So, what condition are your brakes in?

Below are some of the key signs that your brakes need to be serviced.

Unusual Noises

If your brakes have been making a grinding or squealing sound, this is a good indication that the brake pads are worn away and need to be replaced.

Pulling

Pulling refers to your vehicle going to one side when the brakes are applied. This could be the result of your brakes being maladjusted, a leak in brake fluid or your brakes wearing out unevenly and needing replacement.

Pedal Issues

If you are having a hard time pressing down your brake pedal or you find it feels “spongy”, there is a high likelihood that air has entered the brake lines. In this scenario, low brake fluid could also be the culprit.

Performance Issues

If you are noticing that the response time of your brakes is slowing or if you see your brake warning light appear on the dashboard, DO NOT ignore these signs.

How Can I Prolong the Life of My Brakes?

A large contributing factor in how long our brakes last is how you drive your vehicle. Opposed to slamming on the brakes suddenly, try gradually coming to a stop. Of course, there are situations where stopping suddenly is a must; however, braking smoothly goes a long way in extending the life of your brakes.

Also depending on the environment in which you drive–urban or rural–you can explore brake pads made from different compounds to meet varying performance needs.
