What to Know When Filing Insurance Claims in An Auto Accident

Know Your Policy

It’s important to go over your insurance policy in depth. Your policy will specify your insurance coverage, your rights and your responsibilities under the contract.

Have the Necessary Information Ready

When contacting your insurance company after an accident, there is certain information they will need to handle your case, including:

  • The make, model, year registration and license plate number of the vehicle;
  • Accident details such as driver’s name and driver’s license number (if the driver is not the registered owner);
  • The date, time and accident location;
  • Extent of any injuries;
  • The extent of damage to the vehicle;
  • And, of course, your description of the accident.

What Happens Once I File a Claim with My Insurance Company?

Your insurance company will assign a claims adjuster to your file. The claims adjuster determines the extent of the claim covered by your insurance. The claims adjuster is the main point of contact throughout this process. Should you have questions regarding the coverages provided by your policy this individual can provide clarification.

What If I Disagree with My Insurance Company’s Assessment of the Collision?

If you feel the final decision does not accurately reflect your accident, you are capable of addressing this concern with your claim adjuster. In this scenario, they can explain the Fault Determination Rules that have been applied in your case.

Usually, insurance companies will only reconsider their decision regarding fault if new relevant information is provided. For example, bringing forth an eyewitness that can attest to the circumstances surrounding the accident could justify further review of your case.

What to Expect If Your Vehicle Has Sustained Damage

The amount your insurance company provides to have your vehicle repaired is dependent on:

  • The extent to which you were found at fault for the accident;
  • And the type of insurance you purchased.
